HOUSING APART TOGETHER

Family-friendly housing

Schengenplein, Antwerp

Project developer Dethier is creating a family-friendly residential complex on Schengenplein square in Antwerp. The project consists of 65 residences on a plot owned by the autonomous municipal company AG Vespa. The plot was sold based on the current design. The residential block will consist of four separate buildings surrounding a central courtyard, based on the design by BULK architects and General Architecture. The ground floor has room for small-scale commercial activities on the street side and has five passages to the gardens and entrance halls. Varying heights allow for sufficient daylight to enter the courtyard.

Shared facilities can be found throughout the building, such as a spacious bicycle shed and a work area, a central courtyard, a bathroom on the ground floor, and two roof terraces with a small and a large pavilion. To create a family-friendly environment alongside the collective facilities, great care was taken to design a strong floor plan for each apartment. The apartments are situated on the ground floor, which has direct access to the courtyard via a back door, terrace and external staircase. The upper floors of the tower allow for the flexible creation of large or small homes. The duplexes are stacked on the other side of the block.
