HOUSING APART TOGETHER

Urban high-rise

Fierensblokken, Antwerp

Designed by architect Gustav Fierens, this former modernist social housing complex dates from 1939. The autonomous municipal company AG Vespa saved the complex from demolition and plans to create 122 affordable rental apartments, duplexes and studios around a commercial ground floor. The Rotterdam-based firms Happel Cornelisse Verhoeven and Molenaar & CO were appointed as architects. In their design, the two separate blocks surrounding an enclosed inner area will be transformed into a new urban ensemble with two large, private courtyards and a low-traffic garden street. The street and the courtyards will be connected visually by using the same materials.

To restore the Fierensblokken to a habitable and comfortable state, the existing units will be linked to form apartments with one to four bedrooms. The bathroom, kitchen and storage area will be expanded. All residents will have access to several shared roof terraces, a multipurpose room, a laundry room in the basement, a bicycle shed, and shared playrooms and workspaces. There will also be three guest rooms for visiting family members. The unique 'collective maxi' property will consist of five-room apartments with a communal kitchen and living area. Together, these three 'collective maxi' residences will offer housing for fifteen young starters.
