HOUSING APART TOGETHER

Buying a castle together

Boterberg castle, Kalmthout

Seven families moved into the former caretaker's lodge, stables and outbuildings of the Botenberg castle estate. All of the buildings are listed and were renovated by B-architecten and B-bis. The castle estate borders the Kalmthout Heath and was originally purchased by HEEM project developers. Once completed, the residences were sold separately. The residents maintain shared ownership of both the castle and the landscape, which means the luxury of living on a castle estate has been made accessible to the middle class.

The castle was restored to its former glory and is now home to a psychotherapy practice, a graphic design firm, one apartment, two guest rooms and a stately reception hall with a kitchen for the residents. The outbuildings were converted into seven unique residences and form a compact living complex in the heart of the landscape. They have large windows, with hedges providing the necessary privacy. The residents do their best to maintain the historic garden park and forested area. The only new addition is the swimming pond. This is a private area that is only open to the public on occasions like Heritage Day.
